Here to help you make sense of the minimum wage
The Government recently announced an increase in the minimum wage from €9.15 per hour to €9.55 per hour (from January 1st, 2018). It has also given support for further increases over the next five years.
At Employers Direct we know that an increase in the minimum wage can create HR issues for your business. For example, employees often request an increase in their wage on the basis that they are now earning in or around the minimum wage whereas previously they had been earning above the old minimum rate. Whilst the National Minimum Wage Act specifically states that employees are not entitled to a pay increase in such circumstances, it doesn’t stop the matter becoming a grievance or industrial relations issue.
Alternatively, employers may need to seek pay cuts from those earning above any new minimum wage level, reduce employee hours, increase prices, consider redundancies, etc. Whatever the issue our advisors are on hand to provide professional employment law and HR support for your business.
With the increase in the minimum wage, as an employer, you may also wish to tighten up your performance management processes to ensure that you are getting the most from your employees and accordingly are getting the most bang for your buck. In this case, we can help you ensure that you have contracts of employment in a place that work for you.
